"Pow-Wow,
The Gathering of the Tribes,
The Human Be-in"
This event was held at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California on January 14, 1967. The artist was Rick Griffin.
This is one of the four posters that was officially created for this event 31 years ago. The others three posters were drawn by Stanley Mouse, Michael Bowen and Amy McGill. Additionaly this poster was the second "big time" San Francisco poster that Rick created in the new and blossoming hippie graphic art scene. The first was the "Psychedlic Shop First Anniversary" and "Jook Savage Art Show" poster. The fram ed poster pictured here was also signed personally by Rick. In addition there was a handbill printed on white paper. It is somewhat of a rare piece to come by and fetches a handsome price when found.
As long as we're paying homage to this event in posters, we might as well check out this special treat... the Stanley Mouse and Michael Bowen piece for the same event!
Here is the handbill pictured wit h the printing plate. Awesome.......
Family Dog Presents in San Franisco at California Hall: "Rock and Roll" featuring the CHARLATANS and JEFF ERSON AIRPLANE on January 8th, 1966. The artist was George Hunter (one of the founding members of the Charlatans). Although this event was only the fourth that the Family Dog produced, this was the 8th piece. No poster was ever made for this event. The handbill is on beige paper with black ink. However that is not what is pictured here. Shown here is a picture of the ORIGINAL artwork! This is the earliest known complete piece of original artwork of all the Family Dog posters and handbills ever made. Can you believe it? Nevertheless it isn't pictured in the Art of Rock reference book. I can't say why it was missed. So I send a SOS out there to any of you my fellow citizens of Posterville that may have any information regarding this han dbill. This month commemorates its 31st anniversary. Ya know, even though Posterville is fortunate enough to have this art treasure in it's archives, there is no copy of the actual handbill available! There you go. So if you do happen to have this ha ndbill and there is something here in Posterville that you'd be interested in trading for, let the Professor know!
These pieces celebrated their 30th anniversa ry in November '96!
